October 2026 in Chattanooga, by the numbers

Crashes hit their highest month since at least July 2024, inspection failures fell, police took fewer DUI and drug cases, and 311 got faster while closing more requests as unresolved.

The short version

  • Crashes: 1,144 in October, up 12.7% from 1,015 a year earlier and the most in any month in the file, which starts in July 2024.
  • Building inspections: 14.1% failed, down from 17.7% last October.
  • Police: 2,826 cases, 5.1% fewer than last October. DUI cases fell from 70 to 39; mental health calls rose from 152 to 181.
  • 311: 11,596 requests, down 18.6%. 87.8% closed by their due date, up from 82.1%, but 357 closed as unresolved against 34 a year ago.
  • Permits: 1,067 applications, down 18.4%.

Roads

City police wrote up 1,144 crashes in October. A year earlier it was 1,015. (Our November 7 Data Desk story counted 1,139; 5 more October crashes were filed after that.) More people were hurt, 311 against 252, and 4 people died, against 3 last October.

Some kinds of crashes rose about as fast as the total: 240 were hit-and-runs (205 a year ago) and 237 happened after dark (204). Crashes involving someone on foot or on a bike went from 17 to 21, too few to call a trend.

The chart shows October standing well above every month of the past year. December 2025 was the low point at 534.

Police reports

The city recorded 2,826 police cases in October, down from 2,977. These are reports, not convictions, and one case can carry more than one type.

The biggest moves, case for case:

Type Oct 2025 Oct 2026
Serving warrant 210 152
Drug and narcotic violations 157 121
Driving under the influence 70 39
Trespassing 132 162
Mental health calls 152 181
Aggravated assault 96 76
Vehicle theft 48 65

Simple assault was flat at 239 both years. The fall in warrants, drug cases and DUIs, all of which depend on officers going out and making a stop, is larger than the fall in cases people call in. The data doesn’t say why.

311

Residents filed 11,596 requests with 311 in October, against 14,240 a year ago. The city closed 87.8% of them by the due date it had set, up from 82.1%.

The other side of that: 357 October requests were closed with the status “closed, unresolved”, up from 34. The records don’t say why a request was closed that way.

Missed recycling pickups fell from 282 to 204. Requests about overgrown private property jumped from 27 to 122, and two request types that didn’t exist last October, “solid waste route concern” (103) and “annex front door” (90), now show up in the top twelve. New request types usually mean the city changed how calls are sorted, so the overall total is the fairer comparison.

Building

The city took 1,067 permit applications, down from 1,307. Electrical permits fell from 332 to 223, gas from 93 to 50, and land-disturbing permits from 72 to 44. Demolition permits went from 44 to 26.

The city added a new residential permit category in December 2025, so residential building numbers can’t be compared year to year by category. The total includes everything.

Inspectors graded 3,711 building inspections in October and failed 522 of them, 14.1%. Last October it was 653 of 3,694, or 17.7%.

Code enforcement

Code enforcement opened 841 violations from October 1 to 29, the newest day the city has published, down from 963 over the same days last year. Overgrowth was the top violation at 229 (288 last year), followed by litter at 211 (233). Citations for appliances left outside rose from 21 to 49.
