Code enforcement opened its fewest August-September cases since 2014

Chattanooga code enforcement opened 1,780 new cases in August and September 2026 (counted by each case's first logged activity).

Chattanooga code enforcement opened 1,780 new cases in August and September 2026 (counted by each case’s first logged activity). That is the fewest for those two months in any year since 2014 (1,634), and 42% below the same months of 2025 (3,055). From 2015 to 2025 the August-September total ranged from 2,000 to 3,066. August alone had 1,043 new cases, the lowest August since 2014. September had 737, down from 1,545 a year earlier. The slowdown is concentrated in these two months. January through July 2026 opened 8,566 cases, which is 7% below 2025 (9,235) and above 2024 (8,268). The Code Enforcement Violations table shows the same thing: cases with a recorded violation between Aug 1 and Sep 27 fell from 2,381 in 2025 to 1,099 in 2026. The data records cases the city opened, not how many problems existed, and it does not give a reason for the drop.
